The American wine industry is finally becoming more inclusive

Wine is no longer exclusively a beverage for elderly, white males. The American wine industry is at last modernizing, and this has led to a far more environment-conscious industry.

Allow space for AHIVOY, a Willamette Valley-based organization working to maintain the industry's rightful representation. The organization's goal is to strengthen the Oregon wine industry by educating and empowering vineyard managers.

"They kept coming back to education and how it helped them move ahead in the sector," Ornelas says. "They wanted to help those in the vineyard performing some of the most important work, but not being offered the same opportunities as others."

AHIVOY's (AsociaciĆ³n Hispana de la Industria del Vino en Oregon y Comunidad) president is Deanna Ornelas. She claims that a gathering of a few important Mexican wine industry figures in Oregon was the catalyst for everything.

How AHIVOY got its start

Winemakers have long said that the vineyard is where wine is made. There isn't much use in fermenting fruit if it isn't nice fruit. It turns out that the Latinx population performs a large portion of that vineyard work.

How does AHIVOY work?

Participants are equipped with the knowledge to make waves in the business from a viticultural and enological standpoint, as well as everything in between, thanks to the intensive professional training program.

Marketing, logistics, business, compliance, and other topics are covered in depth. It is bilingual and provides employees with a real professional path or upward mobility toward leadership, not just a prospective entry into the scene.

There are currently six program instructors, including professors of winemaking, Masters of Wine, and others. 15 people completed the program's 17-week, six-hour-per-week educational component last spring.
